DETERMINING YOUR WELLNESS PROFILE: THE FITNESS APPRAISAL – MYTHS & FACTS

Myth
1. A physical examination isn't necessary for college students who are feeling all right.
2. Weekend party drinking and the occasional use of drugs is perfectly safe.
3. Fitness testing will make me too sore to function the next day.
4. I know enough about my fitness level already and do not need to be tested.
5. The 1.5-mile test for cardiorespiratory endurance is too dangerous.
FACTS
I'm fit enough. Too much exercise will cause athlete's heart and jeopardize my health.
1. It is quite common for young adults to feel good yet still have high blood pressure and/or high blood cholesterol. These "silent" killers afflict adults of all ages and are only detected through regular checkups. Although you may have no reason to suspect them, ailments may be detected in their early stages when treatment is most effective.
2. Even monthly episodes of drinking that always result in intoxication and behavior problems are a sign of alcohol abuse that may lead to serious health problems in the future. Alcohol and drug use is never safe. Recreational use of any drug imposes immediate health concerns due to behavior problems or an overdose reaction since it is often impossible to judge the potency of illicit drugs or the way you will react when drugs are combined with alcohol or other drugs.
3. When sedentary people complete tests that require maximum effort, they do experience considerable soreness the next day. The areas of soreness show which muscles you have not been using. Many college instructors eliminate the problem of soreness by using a two- to three-week preconditioning program before performing any maximum-effort fitness testing.
4. You may have a good feel for some aspects of your physical fitness. On the other hand, standardized tests may be just what you need to compare yourself to others of your age and to highlight the areas in which you need the most improvement. Test results often provide strong motivation for individuals to begin an exercise program.
5. The test is not dangerous if it is performed properly. If you have been inactive for more than a year or have never engaged in aerobic exercise, you have several choices. First, you can skip the 1.5-mile test, assume that your cardiorespiratory fitness rating is poor, and choose a beginner's aerobic exercise program that allows you to progress slowly and safely to higher levels. Second, you can undertake a two- to three-week preconditioning program of walking and jogging to prepare yourself for the 1.5-mile test. Finally, you can choose to stop and walk during any or all of the test, as long as you give it your best effort.
6. "Athlete's heart," or "sportherz," is a term used by a Swedish researcher who detected enlarged heart muscles among skiers in 1899. As the years passed, the term gained momentum and was used incorrectly to refer to an abnormally large heart brought on by exercise. Because of this myth, some people actually became concerned that exercise would damage their hearts and result in disability or death. Aerobic exercise does develop the heart muscle more fully and cause it to become heavier and larger. It also causes the heart to pump more blood per beat (stroke volume) and per minute (cardiac output) and to become a more efficient organ. Cardiac changes that occur from aerobic exercise are both natural and healthy, and it is highly unlikely that proper aerobic exercise would cause damage to a healthy heart.
