DETERMINING YOUR WELLNESS PROFILE: THE FITNESS APPRAISAL - WORKING FOR A SMOKE-FREE SOCIETY

The association between tobacco use and disease has been strongly established. The controversy is over: Tobacco use in any form is without a doubt the leading cause of preventable death and disability in the United States. Unfortunately, many American teenagers and adults continue to smoke or use smokeless tobacco. We must all continue to help our community and society become smokeless. Here are some things you can do:
1. Adopt a smoke-free lifestyle and set an example for your friends, colleagues, and fellow students.
2. Join the movement to discourage tobacco use in the United States. Make your dormitory, apartment, or house completely smoke-free by eliminating ashtrays, matches, and designated smoking areas. If you work for a private company, ask your human resources or personnel department to encourage antismoking programs and to eliminate cigarette machines and ashtrays in the workplace. Discourage individuals from smoking in everyway possible.
3. Organize free informational programs to help people stop smoking through your church or temple, fitness or wellness club, school, or workplace.
4. Work with young people in group sports, day camps, or other activities, such as Girl Scout and Boy Scout groups, and encourage them to discourage the use of tobacco among their families, friends, and communities.
5. Effectively use the power of peer pressure to encourage friends and family to stop smoking. Get friends, siblings, parents, and other relatives to express their concern directly to the smoker about her or his tobacco use.
6. Actively support programs and legislation aimed at monitoring and discouraging tobacco advertising.
7. Support the American Lung Association, the American Cancer Society, and the American Heart Association. These organizations offer effective programs to help people stop using tobacco. Check your phone book for their addresses and phone numbers.
