DETERMINING YOUR WELLNESS PROFILE: THE FITNESS APPRAISAL - FLEXIBILITY ASSESSMENT

Flexibility is an important component of fitness. It involves the ability to move the body throughout a range of motion and stretch the muscles and tissues around skeletal joints. The shoulder reach, trunk flexion, and trunk extension tests provide an excellent indication of body flexibility. Use Table 2.6 to help evaluate your flexibility.
Shoulder Reach From a standing position, raise your right arm and reach down behind your back as far as possible. At the same time, reach up from behind with the left hand and try to overlap the palm of the right hand. Have a partner measure, in inches, how much the fingers on your right hand overlap the fingers of the left hand. If you overlap, place a plus sign in front of the amount of overlap on the Lab Activity 2.2: Your Physical Fitness Profile sheet; if the fingers of your right and left hand do not touch, place a minus sign in front of the amount of the gap. If the fingers of one hand just barely touch those of the other, give yourself a score of zero. Repeat this test with the arms reversed; that is, the arm that first reached down over the shoulder will now reach up from behind the back.
Trunk Flexion To measure the ability to flex your trunk and to stretch the back of your thigh muscles, remove your shoes and sit with your legs straight and your feet flat against a box positioned against a wall. Place a ruler on top of the box. Place one hand on top of the other so the middle fingers are together and the same length. While your partner keeps your knees from bending, lean forward and place your hands on top of the box. Slide your hands along the measuring scale as far as possible without bouncing and hold that position for at least three seconds. Repeat the test two more times and record your highest score to the nearest inch on Lab Activity 2.2. Your score is the number of inches beyond the edge of the box you can stretch (use a plus sign in front of that value) or the number of inches short of the edge of the box you can reach (use a minus sign in front of that value). If you can reach only to the edge of the box, give yourself a score of zero.
Trunk Extension To determine the flexibility of your back, lie on the floor face down with a partner applying pressure on your upper legs and buttocks. Clasp your hands behind your neck, raise your head and chest off the ground as high as possible, and hold that position for three seconds. Ask your partner to measure the distance to the nearest inch between your chin and the floor.
