THE IMPORTANCE OF FLEXIBILITY: INJURY PREVENTION
Regular stretching routines may help reduce the incidence of injury during exercise for athletes and others. Continuous exercise such as jogging, running, cycling, and aerobics tightens and shortens muscles, and tight muscles are more vulnerable to injury from the explosive movements common in sports. A brief warm-up period followed by stretching will not only increase range of motion but will also provide some protection from common soft-tissue injuries such as strains, sprains, and tears. Striving to maintain a full, normal range of motion in each joint with adequate strength, endurance, and power throughout the range will reduce your chances of experiencing an exercise-induced injury.
Lower-Back Pain Pain in the lower back occurs as frequently in our society as the common cold does. This 20th-century plague affects an estimated 8 to 10 million people in the United States who lose over 200 million work days each year. Informal surveys of middle and senior high school athletes indicate that as many as 40 percent have experienced back problems severe enough to result in missed practice time. Although back pain affects all age groups, the elderly are the most vulnerable. The older you are, the more likely you are to have problems with your lower back. No one seems to be immune.
A brief description of your spinal column will help you understand why the back is so vulnerable to injury. The human body has 33 vertebrae that extend from the base of the skull to the tail-bone. The vertebrae form a double S, reverse curve to ensure proper balance and weight-bearing. If the vertebrae were placed directly on top of one another, the back would be only five percent as strong as it is and one step would produce enough trauma and brain jolt to cause concussion. Shock absorbers, known as disks, are located between each vertebra. These capsules of gelatinous matter contain approximately 90 percent water in young people but only 70 percent in older individuals. With loss of water comes a loss of compressibility and increased vulnerability to injury often referred to as slipped, ruptured, or herniated disk. Ruptured disk material may bulge through the rear portion of the outer ring and put pressure on nerves, thereby producing pain in the lower back that can radiate down into the leg and toes (sciatica).
