DETERMINING YOUR WELLNESS PROFILE: THE FITNESS APPRAISAL - BEHAVIORAL CHANGE STRATEGY

Like many other men and women, you may not like undergoing a medical examination. The setting may make you feel so uncomfortable and embarrassed that you will do almost anything to avoid it.
You may detest running and would never choose that form of aerobic exercise. In fact, the mere thought of running 1.5 miles to complete the aerobic test may be a turn-off and destroy your motivation to begin a program.
You are self-conscious about the amount of fat on your body and do not want anyone to measure you with skinfold calipers.
List other roadblocks you are experiencing that seem to be reducing the effectiveness of the fitness assessment phase of your program.
These feelings are quite natural. Fortunately, there are ways to make the experience less traumatic. Consider calling your physician and say that you want to begin an exercise program and would feel better knowing that there are no medical contraindications. Your physician may know enough about your medical history to give you the green light over the phone. If not, make an appointment with your physician to have the tests you want completed, and make it clear that these are the only tests you need at this time and that you are not interested in other examination procedures.
Many people dislike running as a form of exercise. Fortunately, there arc other valuable aerobic choices as beneficial as jogging or running. You also can assess your cardiorespiratory endurance without running. Review the Harvard Step test described in this chapter. Find a bench and complete the test in your gym. Many step classes at fitness centers use this method as a complete workout. You can complete the test alone. If you dislike physical tests, avoid both the 1.5-mile and Harvard Step tests, and select an aerobic exercise program that has a beginner's level and slowly progresses toward more advanced fitness.
This is a common concern, and you have the right to avoid such tests of body composition. Consider some options that will still provide you with some type of assessment.
1. Borrow a skinfold caliper for an hour or two and ask a relative or a close friend to take the measurements.
2. Find equipment to perform hydrostatic (underwater) weighing. A school physical education or biology department might have this kind of equipment. Then you need only put on a bathing suit and submerse yourself in water.
3. Avoid any specific test of body composition, and apply your own pinch an inch method to various body parts. If you are pinching an inch, you are now aware that you possess too much fat in that area. If this occurs • in more than two areas, it is an indication that your total body fat is too high.
