HELPING OTHERS RECOGNIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF STRENGTH AND FLEXIBILITY TRAINING
One critical area of neglect by both the exercising and sedentary population is strength and flexibility training. Although more than 50 percent of adults avoid all forms of exercise, numerous others focus entirely on aerobic training because of the many health-related benefits of long-term involvement. As a result, loss of lean muscle mass, strength, and flexibility occurs more rapidly as we age. By age 50, most individuals possess considerably less lean muscle mass and have lost both strength and range of motion. Loss of lean muscle mass is a key factor in the slowing of metabolism with aging—a major contributor to overfatness and obesity in the elderly. Because of loss of flexibility, many adults will eventually be unable to perform without discomfort daily functions that they now take for granted, such as tying their shoes, combing their hair, getting in and out of vehicles, and bending over to pick up objects.
The good news is that both strength and flexibility can be maintained throughout life with minimum effort. You can help relay this message to college students, who need to form the habit of including these two areas in their workout routines, and to your parents, grandparents, and the elderly. Consider doing one or more of the following as a project in your health or physical education class, after clearing with your instructor:
1. Review the numerous benefits of strength and flexibility training discussed in this chapter before developing an easy, safe program the elderly can perform in the home without any special equipment in less than 25 minutes. Include both a maintenance program and a program to improve both fitness components.
2. Prepare a similar program for college students and present your findings in class.
3. Ask permission for you and some colleagues to visit a retirement home in your area to deliver a 30-minute presentation and demonstration of a practical strength and flexibility program for the elderly.
4. Prepare minimum strength and flexibility standards by gender and body weight and ask your instructor if you can administer the test to your class. Use this data to generate a discussion on the importance of these two fitness components.
