FLEXIBILITY-TRAINING PRINCIPLES: WHEN TO STRETCH - WARM-UP AND COOL-DOWN
Flexibility (stretching) exercises are often too closely associated with warm-up. Consequently, most individuals make the mistake of stretching cold muscles before beginning a workout rather than first warming the body up with some large-muscle activity such as walking or jogging for five to eight minutes or until perspiration is evident. At this point, body temperature has been elevated two to four degrees, and muscles can be safely stretched. Keep in mind that you warm up to stretch, you do not stretch to warm up.
Most organized aerobics classes follow a similar routine that involves a slow, gentle warm-up to cause sweating, followed by careful stretching, vigorous aerobics, and a cool-down period. Joggers and runners may choose to cover the first half mile or so at a very slow pace, then do stretching exercises before completing the run, as opposed to the more common routine of stretching cold muscles prior to the jog or run. Ideally, the majority of a stretching routine should follow the jog, run, cycle, swim, strength-training, or aerobics session and take place at the end of a workout during the cool-down phase. Stretching at the end of your workout when muscle-tissue temperature is high may effectively improve range of motion and reduce the incidence of muscle soreness the following day.
