THE ASSESSMENT OF FLEXIBILITY
Since range of motion is joint-specific, no single test provides an accurate assessment of overall flexibility. Instead, each joint must be evaluated. This explains why so few physical fitness batteries employ a flexibility test. Only recently have test developers begun to include flexibility as part of health-related, physical fitness test batteries. Unfortunately, modern tests generally include only the sit-and-reach test that measures only lower-back and hamstring (the large muscle group located on the back of the upper leg) flexibility. Although this test is quite valuable and accurate, primarily because it involves some of the muscle groups associated with lower-back pain, a more thorough test is also needed.
Take a moment to obtain a quick evaluation of your overall flexibility level, using a less objective approach, by completing the seven subjective tests described in Lab Activity 9.3: Determining Your Total Body Flexibility at the end of the chapter. If you check "yes" in any test, your flexibility is considered good in that joint. Strive to improve your flexibility in the areas where you checked "no." Repeat this series of tests after you have followed a stretching routine for six to eight weeks. You will discover how easy it is to increase your range of motion substantially.
