Warm-up and Cool-down
To warm up properly, perform four to five minutes of walking or light jogging to raise body temperature, and follow it with a brief stretching period. The first of three sets can be used as a light set with a high number of repetitions (15 to 20) and low weight (20-RM). A four- to five-minute stretching period at the close of your workout will help prevent muscle soreness and aid in improving your range of motion.
Full Range of Motion
Each exercise should move through the full range of motion without locking out the joint. The arm curl, for example, should result in the weight being moved as close to the chest as possible on the positive phase, before returning to the starting position without locking the elbow joint. When lifting heavy arm or leg weights, injuries are much more likely to occur to a joint that is fully extended at both the beginning and ending phases of an exercise.
Proper Breathing
One recommended breathing procedure is to inhale as the weight is lowered and to exhale as the weight is raised or pushed away from the body. You should attempt to blow the weight away from the body. This procedure will improve your efficiency and reduce the risk of holding your breath and blacking out during demanding exertion. Until the correct breathing is mastered, practice the technique with light weights.
