You can complete the pull-up test for men by grasping an adjustable horizontal bar with your palms facing away from the body. Now raise your body until your chin clears the top of the bar, then slowly lower yourself to a full hang without any pause as many times as you can. Your body must return to a stretch position (elbows locked) each time. Deliberate swinging, resting, or leg kicking is not permitted. Table 2.5 will help you evaluate the strength and endurance of your arms and shoulders.
The modified pull-up for women closely resembles the pull-up for men. An adjustable horizontal bar is grasped with your palms facing away from the body at a level that is just even with the base of the sternum (breastbone). Your body is now placed under the bar until a 90-degree angle is formed at the point where the arms and the chest join. Only the heels support the weight of the lower body. One point is scored each time your chin is pulled over the bar and the body returns to the support position with the arms fully extended.
The bar dip test is used to determine the strength and endurance of the triceps and shoulder girdle. Using parallel bars, begin in a straight-arm support position close to the bar ends. The idea is to lower your body slowly until your arms form a 90-degree bent-arm position. After reaching this position, attempt to straighten your arms until you return to the starting position.
