DETERMINING YOUR WELLNESS PROFILE: THE FITNESS APPRAISAL - MUSCULAR ENDURANCE ASSESSMENT

There is a great difference between muscular endurance and muscular strength, and therefore among the kinds of tests that apply to these components. Strength tests determine the maximum amount of weight that can be moved one time, whereas endurance tests measure continuous work by determining the total number of times a specific weight can be moved. It is important to evaluate the muscular endurance of your arms, shoulders, and abdominal area by completing the pull-up or bar dip (men), flexed-arm hang (women), and the sit-up (men and women). After completing these tests, remember to record your scores on the Lab Activity 2.2.
Abdominal Endurance Testing Although it is difficult to obtain a pure, isolated measurement of the abdominal region, the 60-second bent-knee sit-up test is one of the best tests available. To test yourself, assume a supine position with arms folded across your chest, knees bent at a 90-degree angle with both feet flat on the floor and in front of your buttocks. The feet should be anchored by a partner who grasps your ankles. You may do several practice sit-ups prior to the official testing session. At the "go" command, begin a series of rapidly executed bent-knee sit-ups. Your partner will count each correct repetition, eliminating those containing any procedural infraction such as failing to reach the vertical sitting position, lifting the feet from the floor, or not returning to the starting position with the middle of the back touching the floor. Consult Table 2.4 to evaluate your performance.
