DETERMINING YOUR WELLNESS PROFILE: THE FITNESS APPRAISAL - MUSCULAR STRENGTH ASSESSMENT

In the laboratory, muscular strength, the absolute maximum force that a muscle can generate, is measured using elaborate and expensive equipment. Dynamometers, cable tensiometers, and force transducers and recorders have all been used this way. One problem with such methods is the need to test numerous muscle groups to obtain an accurate measure in the legs, the abdomen, and the arms. These muscles cover such diverse body parts, however, that you can safely assume their levels of muscular strength are representative of total body strength.
You can also measure the strength and endurance of practically any muscle group by using free weights or a variety of weight machines. In some cases, you can test yourself; in others, such as the 1 -RM testing using barbells, you will need a spotter to assist you throughout the movement.
1-RM (Repetitions Maximum) Testing Free weights are commonly used to determine your 1-RM (maximum amount of weight you can lift one time) for a particular muscle group.
The bench press and shoulder press will accurately measure the strength of your triceps, pectoralis, and deltoid muscles; the arm curl measures bicep muscle strength, and the leg press will determine the strength of the quadriceps muscle group. For each test, a weight is selected that can be lifted comfortably. Additional weight is then added in subsequent trials until the weight is found that can be lifted correctly just one time. If the weight can be lifted more than once, additional weight is added until a true 1-RM is determined. Approximately three trials with a two- to three-minute rest interval between each are needed to determine the 1-RM for each muscle group. Since the resistance to be overcome in 1-RM testing is heavy, it is important to use one or two spotters to protect you from injury by taking over the barbell should you be unable to complete the lift. See chapter 9 for an explanation of the proper technique for these tests.
